Reus will limit the bonfires of Sant Joan and Sant Pere to authorized spaces and with mandatory safety measures to prevent damage to people, vehicles, and urban furniture during the festivities. The mayor, Sandra Guaita, has issued the traditional decree with the conditions for lighting fires in the city.
The main restriction affects location. Bonfires cannot be placed less than 15 meters from facades, cars, or infrastructure such as power lines, lampposts, traffic lights, and other public space elements, nor can they be lit in gardens, urban parks, forest areas, or within the 500-meter strip surrounding them.
Bonfires can only be lit from 10:00 PM
Lighting will be limited from 10:00 PM on June 23rd and 28th. Furthermore, the fire must be completely extinguished before 2:00 AM on the following days.
On vacant lots, organizers will need the owner's authorization. When the bonfire is made on public roads, a permit for occupation will be mandatory, as well as protecting the pavement with a layer of sand or earth at least ten centimeters thick.
This protection cannot impede the passage of emergency vehicles. Those responsible must also monitor the bonfire until it is completely extinguished and have means to put it out, such as hoses connected to the water supply, fire extinguishers, or containers with water.
Reus City Council prohibits burning plastics, tires, and aerosols
The decree only allows burning wood or materials that generate embers. Plastics, tires, drums, aerosols, and any other polluting or explosive element are prohibited.
It is also forbidden to throw firecrackers or other pyrotechnic material into the bonfires. Outside of them, the council prohibits throwing firecrackers at people or using them inside homes, terraces, and interior patios, and recommends using only approved products and following their safety instructions.
Those who organize a bonfire must report the activity to the General Registry of the Reus City Council and prove that they comply with all the required measures. Additionally, they must have civil liability insurance covering damages to third parties and public and private property.
The day after the celebration, those responsible must remove the waste and protective materials used. Sandra Guaita also states in the decree that the council may prohibit the lighting for meteorological reasons or for non-compliance with regulations, with sanctions provided for in current legislation.
