An 87-year-old woman of Italian nationality died by drowning on Friday afternoon while swimming at Platja de Ponent in Salou. The victim's body was found floating in the water and a swimmer immediately alerted emergency services.
The death occurred before the official start of the bathing season, set for June 1. The woman, known in the area, had a routine of going for a swim every afternoon at this beach on the Tarragona coast.
The alert came in at 4:51 PM and the first ambulance arrived six minutes later
Emergency services received the alert at 4:51 PM. Two medical vehicles were dispatched to Platja de Ponent to attend to the victim.
When paramedics arrived at the scene, they began resuscitation maneuvers, but could not save her life. The intervention of the emergency teams ended without success despite the speed of the initial assistance.
A swimmer found the body and a neighbor identified the victim
The body was found floating by another swimmer, who raised the alarm. Shortly after, a local woman who knew the deceased helped identify her.
