The Reus City Council will launch on Monday, May 4, the preliminary works to transform Astorga street into a civic axis, a project that will last around one year and that mobilizes an investment of close to 3.63 million euros.
The intervention will be developed in two phases and seeks to reinforce the connection between the south zone of the city and the center, with continuity up to the railway station. The project also foresees an integral reorganization of the public space in this urban area, with changes in mobility, more green areas and new stay spaces.
First phase between Sant Bernat Calvó and Terenci Moix
The first phase will start next week and will act on Astorga street from the roundabout of Sant Bernat Calvó avenue to Terenci Moix street, in addition to Escultor Sunyol and Papallona streets. This first section has been awarded to the UTE formed by CCDL Baix Camp Tarragonès for 1,778,977.54 euros.
The second phase will reach the section of Astorga comprised between Terenci Moix street and the roundabout of Mediterrani avenue. At this moment, it is in the project approval phase and comes out with a tender budget of 1,847,425.10 euros. The municipal forecast is to start these works in summer.
Funding of Generalitat and Diputació
The action will count on several lines of supramunicipal financing. The main one corresponds to the Pla de Barris i Viles de Catalunya 2025 2029, through the Department of Territory, Housing and Ecological Transition of the Generalitat, with a subsidy of 2,192,599.90 euros. To this amount is added an aid of 789,900 euros within the PUOSC 2025 2029 and another contribution of 850,160.42 euros from the Diputació de Tarragona within the framework of the Pla ImpulsDipta.
Part of the funding also comes from the Pla de Barris, which in Reus will focus on the neighborhoods in the south of the city, and from the Pla Únic d'Obres i Serveis de Catalunya.
A new thoroughfare with central bike lane and more pedestrian space
The design planned for Astorga street incorporates a traffic lane for vehicles in each direction and, between both, a central two-way bike lane. The road will maintain the bus stops and will be complemented with sidewalks of a minimum width of 1.8 meters, connected with new green spaces.
On Escultor Sunyol and Papallona streets, a single platform will be implemented with preference for pedestrians. A new square will also be created in front of the CAP, and roundabouts will be eliminated along Astorga street to gain spaces and green areas.
The remodeling foresees planting 100 trees, 3,000 shrubs and 8,000 plants, in addition to adapting the routes of the new sidewalks to preserve and expand the existing tree cover. The project also incorporates a reinforcement of the draining surfaces to improve the hydraulic response in episodes of intense rain.
More lighting, urban furniture and mobility plan
The urbanization will include the installation of 120 new lighting points and the modernization of the network with two-arm streetlights and lower-consumption LED technology. The public space will be completed with more than 100 benches and chairs to encourage neighborhood stay.
During the works, the City Council has prepared a mobility plan to reduce the impact on the surroundings. The plan includes alternative routes for the affected bus lines, a parking alternative, and specific signage for traffic cuts. The municipal forecast is that the entire works process will last approximately one year, with the objective of converting this southern corridor of Reus into a new axis of civic and urban connection.
