More than three thousand women ran in the rain in Reus this Sunday morning to support the fight against cancer. The annual event transformed the city's wet streets into a stage of solidarity and physical resistance.
The meeting point was the Plaza de la Libertad, where the festive atmosphere resisted the adverse weather. Shortly before eleven in the morning, the warm-up with zumba began to activate the participants before the official start.
Record of solidarity participation
The organization enabled 3,300 bibs for the adult category and another 300 intended for the children's race and companions. The bibs for adults sold out weeks before the event's celebration, which reflects the high citizen interest.
Despite completing the physical capacity, donations remained open through the figure of the dorsal zero. This route allowed for additional contributions to be added to the cause beyond the limitation of places on the asphalt.
"a day like today is very important to participate, because it is a day when all women unite, we gain strength and empower health and sport" - Alba and Marina, participants
The official distance of the course was five kilometers, a route designed to be accessible but competitive. The first female runners crossed the finish line in less than twenty minutes, setting an intense pace from the start.
Funds for research and prevention
The sale of registrations managed to raise 41,447 euros that will have a specific destination in the local health field. This amount will be distributed between the League against Cancer of Tarragona and Terres de l'Ebre.
A significant portion of the resources will directly benefit the Epidemiology and Cancer Prevention Service of the San Juan de Reus Hospital. The investment strengthens early detection and patient support programs in the region.
"It is a solidarity cause", "for our families, for the women who are not here and for those who are" - Cristina and Maite, runners
Other participants such as Estefania, Jordina, Margarita and Loli highlighted the symbolism of the date coinciding with Mother's Day. For them, running meant claiming their own space for well-being and companionship.
Isabel and Ángela added their voice to explain that their main motivation was to motivate other women and support those who are fighting. The message transcended the sporting competition to become an act of visibility.
The rain did not manage to extinguish the energy of a day that combined sport and social commitment in the center of Reus. Each step taken on the wet asphalt represented a tangible contribution to oncological research.
