Maria Dolors "Lola" March, a 96-year-old resident of Reus, maintains a daily routine of walks of more than three hours through the city and has become one of the regular faces of the municipal program Reus es Mou, a free outdoor proposal that is held two days a week.
March participates every Tuesday and Thursday in this initiative promoted by the Reus City Council. She does so with a cane and after having suffered a stroke three years ago. Even so, she maintains a constant activity that takes her to visit different points of the municipality for much of the day.
A routine marked by exercise
The woman summarizes with simplicity the origin of her physical resistance.
"I am a farmer, this is my secret" - Maria Dolors "Lola" March
Her case exemplifies the profile of some of the people who participate in Reus es Mou, a program designed to promote physical activity in an accessible environment. The initiative is municipal, free, takes place outdoors and does not require prior registration, which facilitates the incorporation of residents of different ages and conditions.
A proposal focused on health and companionship
The Sports Councilor, Enrique Martín, frames the project as a "tool for physical and mental health". The approach is not limited to exercise, but also seeks to reinforce emotional well-being and socialization among attendees.
Along those same lines expresses Àngel Blasco, monitor and coordinator of the program.
"It is not an individual sports practice, but a shared one. It is a safe space" - Àngel Blasco, program coordinator
Blasco adds that
"The fact that it is outdoors, without registration and totally free gives freedom and eliminates barriers" - Àngel Blasco, coordinator of the program
The participation of Lola March, with 96 years, a cane and a daily routine that exceeds three hours walking, reflects the scope of an activity conceived to favor daily movement without prior requirements. In Reus, her presence has already been integrated into the usual image of a program that emphasizes walking, sharing, and staying active.
