A man was admitted in serious condition to Joan XXIII hospital in Tarragona after the fire declared on the afternoon of Wednesday, April 15, in an apartment on Flamenc street, in L Ampolla. The fire originated in a dwelling on the second floor and was detected a few minutes before 5:30 PM.
The injured person was the tenant of the affected apartment. He suffered burns when he tried to extinguish the fire by his own means, without succeeding. The Local Police of L Ampolla located him in the building and evacuated him outside so that he could be attended to by emergency services.
Fire in a room and large accumulation of smoke
Firefighters mobilized five units to the building. The fire was located in one of the rooms of the apartment and, although it did not generate a large flame load, it did cause significant smoke that complicated the intervention inside the property.
During the operation, the officers also rescued a person who was on the balcony of an apartment on the fourth floor. This person did not present injuries nor symptoms of smoke intoxication.
Helicopter transfer to Tarragona
El Sistema d Emergències Mèdiques activated three ambulances and a medicalized helicopter to attend to the emergency. The injured neighbor was transferred by air to the hospital Joan XXIII, where he was admitted with a serious prognosis.
Health sources also contemplate a possible subsequent transfer to Bellvitge hospital for admission to the burns unit, depending on the evolution of the injuries.
Intervention closed before eight in the evening
Bombers declared the fire extinguished in less than 30 minutes. The joint action of the emergency services and the Local Police lasted for several hours and concluded shortly before 8:00 p.m., once the building was secured and the attention to those affected was finalized.
