The Mossos d'Esquadra arrested on Wednesday night a 54-year-old man, resident of Aiguamúrcia, for his alleged involvement in the fatal hit-and-run of a cyclist on the TP 2002 road and for having abandoned the scene without notifying emergency services or assisting the victim. The arrest took place at his home in the nucleus of Les Pobles.
The accident occurred on Wednesday, April 22, around 5:45 p.m. at kilometer point 5.6 of the TP 2002, within the municipal district of Aiguamúrcia, in the Alt Camp, in an area near the Santes Creus monastery. A driver raised the alarm after finding the injured cyclist on the road.
The victim died at the scene of the incident
To the scene came personnel from Bombers, the SEM and the Mossos d'Esquadra. Despite the intervention of the emergency teams, it was not possible to revive the man, who ended up dying at the scene.
The victim was a 44-year-old man, resident of Tarragona and nurse at Joan XXIII hospital. The investigation opened by the Catalan police maintains that the detainee would be the alleged perpetrator of the fatal hit-and-run.
Investigation opened for abandonment of the scene
The arrested person is attributed, for now, an alleged crime of abandonment of the scene of the accident. The Mossos keep the investigation underway to determine if it is also appropriate to charge him with other possible crimes, among them omission of aid and reckless homicide.
The arrest occurred a few hours after the accident, once police efforts to identify the vehicle and locate the alleged driver had advanced. The man was arrested at his home in Les Pobles, one of the nuclei of the municipality.
Eighth fatality of the year in Tarragona
With this death, there are already eight people deceased in 2026 on interurban roads in the province of Tarragona. Three of those victims have been registered during the month of April, in a balance that once again places attention on the accident rate on the Tarragona road network.
The case remains under investigation while the Mossos try to close all ends of the hit-and-run occurred in Aiguamúrcia, on a stretch of the TP 2002 very close to Santes Creus and frequented by both vehicles and cyclists.
