The plenary session of the Tarragona City Council has demanded that the Generalitat rectify immediately the proposal to eliminate an I3 line in El Miracle and Pràctiques and the reduction of ratios planned for the city's public schools. The initiative was approved this Monday in the Plenary Hall based on a motion promoted by ECP and joined by ERC.
The motion has had the support of the PSC and of councilor Elvira Vidal, declared a defector by Junts. For their part, PP, Vox, Junts and the non-attached councilors Javier Gómez and Jaime Duque have abstained.
Criticism for lack of transparency
The approved text maintains that the decisions of the Department headed by councilor Esther Niubó have been adopted without due transparency or adequate prior communication. It also reproaches that they have been taken without room to open an informative and participatory debate with the educational community.
The motion maintains that the planned reduction in ratios entails the disappearance of 95 public I3 places next academic year. In the opinion of the groups that have endorsed it, that loss of provision is equivalent to the closure of five lines.
The petition of the plenary to the Government
The municipal agreement proposes urging the Government to rectify the planned ratios and to recover the suppressed educational lines, both through closure and through ratio reduction. The objective set in the document is to guarantee a sufficient offer in the local public school.
Furthermore, the plenary asks the Generalitat to annul the suppression of overlapping centers that affect educational zones 3 and 4, corresponding to El Miracle and Saavedra. The motion adds another specific demand, that the offer of public places be sufficient to cover the existing demand.
Mobilization of the families in Tarragona
The vote comes after several weeks of social protest in the city. The platform of affected families has carried out two mobilizations to demand that the Government halt the planned changes in school planning.
In that same context, 12 AFAs from educational centers in Tarragona delivered a manifesto to the Departament d"Educació in which they denounce the emergency situation that, in their opinion, public schools in the city are experiencing. With the agreement of the plenary, the council now raises that institutional pressure on the Generalitat in the midst of discussions about the educational offer for the next academic year.
