About 300 people gathered this Sunday in Montbrió del Camp to express their rejection of the project for six wind farms planned in the Baix Camp plain. The mobilization, convened by the platform Aturem els Molins, brought together residents from different municipalities of the region, political representatives and entities of the territory.
The protest came after the first unfavorable report issued by the Generalitat about this initiative, promoted by Tesera Energía SL in the municipal terms of Montbrió del Camp and Riudecanyes, became known.
Eight columns in defense of the territory
The demonstration unfolded with eight columns of people walking to the meeting point. The event served to stage the neighborhood and institutional opposition to a project that contemplates the installation of six windmills of more than 150 meters high and a very high voltage line of almost 30 kilometers.
That electrical infrastructure would cross Riudoms, Vinyols i els Arcs, Reus, Vila seca, Constantí and La Pobla de Mafumet to connect the generated energy with industrial facilities.
"We want a just energy transition, at the service of people and that does not sacrifice food sovereignty" - Pau Arasa, spokesperson for Aturem els Molins
The platform's spokesperson, Pau Arasa, maintained that the mobilization responds to the rejection of the installation of a mega wind farm in Montbrió and Riudecanyes which, in his opinion, does not respond to the needs of the area, has been promoted against the population and would leave private benefits. He also assured that more than 2,500 allegations have been presented against the project.
"It is an unbearable impact, destroying agricultural heritage, historical heritage and an entire way of life" - Pau Arasa, spokesperson for Aturem els Molins
The affected city councils maintain the opposition
The mayor of Montbrió del Camp, Carmina Blay, intervened on behalf of the affected town councils and reiterated the institutional rejection of the proposal.
"We do not want this megaproject in our territory" - Carmina Blay, mayor of Montbrió del Camp
Blay warned that the installation of wind turbines of more than 80 meters would mean, in his words, to shred the territory. Regarding the recently known negative urban planning report, he remarked that it destroys all agricultural activity and that the impact would be very negative.
The mayor asked for prudence despite the first administrative setback to the project. She considers that it can be a first step, but insists that other reports are still missing and that it is not time to relax.
Contrary reports sent to the Generalitat
The town councils of Montbrió del Camp, Riudecanyes, Riudoms and Vinyols i els Arcs have commissioned legal and environmental reports against the initiative and have already sent them to the Generalitat. These documents conclude that the infrastructure does not adequately conform to municipal urban planning schemes, would occupy agricultural land and would affect the rural landscape.
Aturem els Molins has announced that it will maintain pressure throughout the entire process. The platform assures that it will continue exerting pressure and scrutinizing the process until achieving the definitive paralysis of a project that has activated a sustained opposition in several municipalities of Baix Camp.
