The expansion of the Institut Escola Joan Ardèvol de Cambrils has been paralyzed after the contract with the awarded company was terminated without the works being completed. The decision has been published since March 27 on the Generalitat de Catalunya's Contracting Platform.
The contract was awarded in 2023 for about 4.6 million euros, as part of a project aimed at expanding the educational center. The termination now forces a redo of part of the administrative process before the action can be resumed.
Explanations in the municipal plenary
The situation came to light during a plenary session of the Cambrils City Council, after the questions asked by the opposition. It was then when the Councillor for Education, Natalia Pleguezuelos, detailed the status of the file and the contacts maintained with the involved administrations and the educational community.
"We have held a meeting with Serveis Territorials, the Department of Education of the Generalitat, the City Council, the mayor's office itself, the AFA and the school's management. We have asked for explanations (...) and what is happening now is that a lot of time has passed since the award and there has been an increase in costs" - Natalia Pleguezuelos, Councillor for Education
The councilwoman added that now adjustments must be introduced in the project, a step prior to a new tender. That technical and economic fit, as she explained, responds to the time elapsed since the initial award and to the increase in prices.
New calendar for the performance
Pleguezuelos conveyed that the Generalitat's forecast involves dedicating six months to adapting the project in terms of prices and another six months to re-award the works. That new horizon notably delays the start of the works.

The councilwoman framed the expansion of the Institut Escola Joan Ardèvol as a priority action for the municipality. "It is a priority to give educational dignity to all our children", she stated during her speech, in a session marked by concern for the future of a project that remains pending reactivation.
