The Mossos d'Esquadra and the Guàrdia Urbana arrested this Tuesday a 48-year-old man accused of fatally stabbing his ex-partner, a 33-year-old woman, in Tarradellas square in Figueres. The attack occurred around 2:45 PM and the SEM teams dispatched to the scene could not save the victim's life.

The case is being investigated as an alleged sexist crime and focuses on an already concrete detail of the case. The detainee had a restraining order in force and had already been arrested on Monday for violating it, just one day before the murder.

The detainee violated the restraining order one day before

The investigation opened after the crime must clarify the complete sequence of events in Tarradellas square, where the Mossos d'Esquadra and the Guàrdia Urbana acted jointly. The victim died at the scene after the knife attack.

Just one day before, the now detained man had already been arrested for violating the judicial measure that prohibited him from approaching his ex-partner. That immediate precedent adds a central element to a case that, for now, is being processed as sexist violence.

In Figueres, the crime has also activated the institutional response foreseen for this type of case. The City Council will convene a minute of silence in condemnation on Wednesday, on a day marked by the impact of the murder in a public space.

Catalunya adds three sexist crimes so far this year

The death of the 33-year-old woman raises to three the sexist crimes registered this year in Catalunya. The official count also places the number of victims at 162 since 2012, when the collection of this data began.

This recent balance coincides with other violent episodes that occurred in the city in recent months, among them recent police operations in Figueres, although the Tarradellas square case is being investigated in the specific area of violence against women.

The Figueres City Council has convened the minute of silence for Wednesday, while the official count maintains this murder as the third sexist crime of the year in Catalunya and number 162 since 2012.
