Civil Protection has activated in the early hours of this Sunday the alert of the Ventcat plan due to the worsening of the weather forecast and the possibility of strong wind in different points of the northern half of Catalonia. The activation was initially planned for the morning, but it has been brought forward due to the evolution of the episode, which will remain until the afternoon.
According to the Meteorological Service of Catalonia, the regions with a more intense impact will be Ripollès, Berguedà, and Alt Empordà. In these areas, gusts can exceed 125 kilometers per hour, with an expected impact of between 30% and 70% of the area under warning.
More risk in the Pyrenees, the Pre-Pyrenees and the Empordà
The weather forecast has raised the probability of very strong gusts, especially in the Pyrenees, the Pre-Pyrenees and the Empordà. The wind will blow from the north and west component and will be more noticeable at high altitudes.
Also, notable gusts can be registered in Baix Empordà, Cerdanya, Garrotxa, Alta Ribagorça, Pallars Jussà, Pallars Sobirà, and Solsonès. In these regions, the wind can reach 100 kilometers per hour.
Warning for bad sea in the Costa Brava
The Meteorological Service of Catalonia has also warned of the poor state of the sea in Alt Empordà and Baix Empordà. The points where a more significant maritime impact is expected are the north of Cap de Creus and Cap de Begur.
Snowfalls and risk of blizzard in the Pyrenees
To the wind episode is added the forecast of snowfalls in the Pyrenees. In the Vall d"Aran and in the Pallars Sobirà, 20 centimeters of snow can be exceeded above 1,200 meters. The combination of snow and wind can also favor the phenomenon of torb in mountain areas.
