An inmate died this Sunday at the Ponent penitentiary center, located in Lleida. The medical services of the establishment tried to revive her without success after locating her lifeless body.
The Department of Justice confirmed the death and initially ruled out suicide. Authorities remain cautious while awaiting definitive forensic reports.
The hypothesis of drug ingestion
Penitentiary sources point to an accidental cause linked to drug trafficking within the prison walls. The woman may have ingested a drug package that broke inside her body. This circumstance would cause acute intoxication that is difficult to reverse.
"The autopsy results are awaited to determine the exact cause" - Department of Justice
The day began normally for the inmate. She had a family visit in the morning without any apparent anomalies detected in her behavior or physical condition.
Finding in the patio bathrooms
Hours after the meeting with her relatives, the surveillance staff found the inmate unconscious in the patio bathrooms. The speed of the health response was not enough to prevent the fatal outcome.
The internal investigation is already underway. The center's managers are verifying if the staff correctly followed the established security protocols for these cases.
The case remains under judicial investigation. The autopsy will determine if there are narcotic substances in the victim's body and will clear up doubts about the exact circumstances of the death.
