A 67-year-old Argentine paraglider died yesterday at noon after suffering a fall while flying in Àger, in La Noguera. The accident occurred approximately one kilometer east of the Montsec area commonly used for paragliding takeoffs.
The fall occurred in one of the best-known locations for this activity in Catalonia, with departures located at over 1,500 meters at Coll d'Ares for expert pilots and at about 1,200 meters for beginners. This operation results in flights of between 850 and 550 meters above the plain in the area where the incident occurred.
The Bombers deployed a helicopter at 12:58 PM
The Bombers de la Generalitat received the alert at 12:58 PM and mobilized an air resources helicopter with personnel from the GRAE of La Seu d'Urgell and a doctor from the SEM. Additionally, a ground support unit departed from the Àger volunteer fire station.
Three SEM ambulances, another helicopter, the Mountain Intervention Unit, and two Mossos d'Esquadra patrols also traveled to the scene. The operation brought together air and ground resources in an area located east of the usual Montsec flight area.
A nurse began resuscitation before the arrival of medical personnel
When the emergency teams arrived, medical services continued the cardiopulmonary resuscitation maneuvers that had been started by a nurse present in the area. Despite this intervention, the victim died at the scene of the accident.
The Mossos d'Esquadra contacted the duty court in Balaguer and carried out the body recovery. Both the Catalan police and the court are now investigating the circumstances of the fall.
The incident took place in an environment where flights take off from altitudes of over 1,500 meters for experts and about 1,200 meters for beginners, with heights above the plain ranging from 850 to 550 meters.
