A 78-year-old inmate, identified as A.P.S., committed suicide yesterday morning in module 3 of the Centre Penitenciari Ponent, in Lleida. He was found lifeless during the morning count after having cut his neck, in a case that has already been verified as an autolysis.
Investigators from the Mossos d'Esquadra went to the prison to confirm the circumstances of the death. The action allowed to rule out, in principle, the participation of third parties and to place the death within the framework of a consummated suicide inside the penitentiary center.
Inmate convicted for the crime of a mosso in Cappont
The deceased was the man who had murdered an agent of the Mossos d'Esquadra on October 8, 2025 around 3:15 p.m. on Doctora Castells street number 17, in the Cappont neighborhood, in Lleida. His death in prison now closes an episode that had a strong impact on the city and among the police force.
Without activated prevention protocol
The Department of Justice has reported that the inmate did not have the suicide prevention protocol activated because no indicators had been detected that justified its application. After what happened, the case once again puts the focus on the monitoring and prevention mechanisms in the penitentiary sphere.

Fourth case in Catalan prisons this year
This is the fourth suicide registered in Catalan penitentiary centers so far this year. The death of this inmate in Ponent thus adds to a statistic that maintains attention on mental health and vigilance in prisons, while the usual internal checks are completed after a death of these characteristics.
