The Civil Guard is investigating a resident of El Vendrell for the alleged dissemination on the internet of a video accompanied by racist and xenophobic comments about the death of a young man in Lleida. The proceedings focus on a publication made in a well-known forum and, for now, on the content of the video and the messages that accompanied it.
The investigation remains open for an alleged crime of illegal hate speech on the internet. The procedure must clarify if the facts fit criminally into a hate crime.
The complaint came from a relative of the victim
The investigations started as a result of the complaint filed by a relative of the deceased young man. According to what was stated in that complaint, a recording of the case had been disseminated on an internet forum along with comments of a racist nature.
The case was taken over by the agents of the Civil Guard's Hate Crime Response Team, who were in charge of tracing the origin of the publication. Based on these efforts, investigators managed to identify the person who, allegedly, would have disseminated the video.
That person has been investigated as the alleged perpetrator of an illegal online hate speech crime.
The events date back to the accident at Lleida station
The cause is linked to what happened on January 28, 2025 at the Lleida train station. That day, a 25-year-old man died after suffering an electric shock and another person was slightly injured.
According to what was reported then, both were trying to climb onto the roof of an Alvia train. After the event, images of the moment after the accident began to circulate online. One of those recordings would be the one that now focuses the police investigation.
The proceedings are already in the court
The Civil Guard has already sent the proceedings to instruction section number 3 of the Lleida court of first instance, which keeps the investigation open. The judicial body must now determine the criminal scope of the video's dissemination and of the comments published alongside those images.
