More than twenty social and political entities from Lleida have publicly rejected the designation of canoeist Saül Craviotto as the pregoner for the upcoming Festa Major. The statement, released this week, questions the athlete's suitability for an event that seeks citizen inclusion.
The Taula per la Democràcia Lleida promotes the text signed by organizations such as Òmnium Lleida-Ponent, the ANC, or the Candidatura d'Unitat Popular. The signatories warn that the choice ignores the sensitivity of part of the citizenry following Craviotto's statements against the referendum of October 1, 2017.
Entities criticize the athlete's police profile
The document points out that Craviotto belongs to the police forces of the Spanish State. The entities recall the role these agents played during the 1-O day and consider that their support for Article 155 places him far from a significant part of Catalan society.
The collectives clarify that they do not question the athlete's individual freedom of expression. However, they argue that his figure does not contribute to the necessary social cohesion in a municipal event. They urge the Paeria to reconsider the decision and open a real participatory process.
"The profile of the town crier would have to generate broad consensus and not controversy" - Statement from the Taula per la Democràcia Lleida
The list of signatories includes PAH Lleida, USTEC, Intersindical, the Feminist Group of Ponent and various Republican Defense Committees from neighborhoods such as Cappont or Barris Nord. Popular and cultural Ateneus of the city also add their signature.
The mayor defends the values of the canoeist
Fèlix Larrosa, mayor of Lleida, responded to the criticisms by defending the athlete's career. The councilor assured that he respects the opinions of the signatory organizations but maintained his commitment to Craviotto.
Larrosa highlighted that the canoeist is an example of professional and personal values. He described him as a role model for the local youth, a quality that in his opinion qualifies him to lead the official opening speech.

The inaugural act of the festivities will be held on Friday, May 8 at 8:00 PM. The Session Hall of the Palau de la Paeria will host the intervention of the Olympic athlete.
