The Arnau de Vilanova hospital has obtained the first MIR place in the new specialty of Emergencies and Urgent Care in Catalonia. This achievement places the Lleida center as the fifth in Spain to be awarded a vacancy for this regulated training.
The state call offers 82 positions throughout the national territory, of which eleven correspond to Catalan hospitals. Lleida concentrates the only position available in the province for this first academic year.
A professional chooses Lleida over other ICS centers
Oriol Yuguero, territorial head of Emergencies, explained that the selected resident previously completed a rotation in the Arnau unit. The doctor obtained one of the best scores on the MIR exam and decided to prioritize this destination.

Yuguero highlighted that the specialty seeks to homogenize training in all Emergency services in Spain. The objective is for professionals to act with unified criteria in complex situations, overcoming the current dependence on non-regulated master's degrees or courses.
The training itinerary includes stays at the Igualada hospital, at the SEM, and at the CAP of Urgencias de Prat de la Riba. The accreditation of the Vielha and La Seu hospitals is pending to complete the practical training circuit.
Accreditations for veterans and future expansion
Twenty-two doctors from Arnau with more than five years of experience in the Emergency Department will validate their specialty directly. Another eight professionals with between two and four years of seniority will have to pass an exam to obtain the title.
Physicians with less time of service will be able to take the exams during the next four years. After that period, the exclusive route to practice the specialty will be through the MIR exam.
The hospital's management plans to expand its training offerings in the coming years. Oriol Yuguero indicated that they expect to offer two new positions starting in 2027 to ensure generational succession.

Lleida will incorporate four specialized health training positions next academic year. This expansion raises the total number of training positions in the city to 93.
The Lleida center has also filled the 29 positions offered for the Nursing, Psychology, Pharmacy, and Biology categories. These appointments were finalized during the last week of April.
The process of choosing a destination for future resident doctors began on Monday. The deadline to formalize assignments will end on May 27.
