Jaume Montfort, mayor of Bellcaire d"Urgell since 2015, has died at the age of 70. The news has caused consternation in the municipality and throughout the Noguera region, where he was a widely known figure for his institutional career.
A decade at the head of the Town Hall
Montfort held the mayoralty of Bellcaire d"Urgell since 2015. During that period, he revalidated the position in the 2019 municipal elections with an absolute majority and did so again in 2023, also with an absolute majority, consolidating his leadership at the head of the council.
His passing has caused a strong shock in Bellcaire d"Urgell and in La Noguera, where he maintained an active presence both in local politics and in regional life.
Responsibilities in the region and in the Catalan administration
In addition to mayor, Jaume Montfort was regional culture councilor in the Noguera Regional Council. His public activity also extended to the Catalan administration, as between 2016 and 2021 he was delegate of the territorial services of Justice in Lleida.
Between 2016 and 2021 he served as delegate of the territorial services of Justice in Lleida, a stage in which he assumed responsibilities beyond the strictly municipal scope.
Training and public profile
Montfort held a degree in Geography and History from the University of Barcelona. That academic background was part of a profile linked to public management and institutional activity, both in Bellcaire d"Urgell and in the region.
He was also regional councillor for Culture in La Noguera, a responsibility he currently held and that reinforced his role within the public life of the territory. His death leaves a void in the Bellcaire d"Urgell City Council and in the institutions of the region.
