The CUP of Lleida analyzes the viability of not presenting its own list in the 2027 municipal elections. The party is studying the promotion of a broad candidacy together with the Comuns to regain representation in the Paeria.

The central objective is to overcome the electoral threshold that left the party out in the last elections. In 2023, the CUP obtained 4.58% of the votes. This figure was insufficient to obtain councilor seats, as the legal barrier is set at 5%.

The alliance with Comuns gains weight

Sources close to the party indicate that one of the options gaining traction is to promote a broad candidacy with the Comuns. This approach seeks to integrate independent individuals, social movements, and progressive sensibilities. The intention is to broaden the electoral base of the alternative left without forming a traditional electoral coalition between parties.

Los Comuns would be a central player in this eventual shared project. The party won one councilor in the Paeria in the 2023 elections. Its current institutional presence facilitates the articulation of a joint proposal that unites the dispersed progressive electorate.

The strategy responds to the need to ensure presence in the municipal plenary. The CUP entered the Paeria for the first time in 2015 with two councilors. However, it lost its institutional presence in 2019 and failed to recover it four years later.

ERC is excluded from the project

The participation of ERC in this possible candidacy is completely ruled out. The strategic and political differences between the formations prevent any type of electoral agreement in this area. The strategic rupture between radical independence and sovereignist left marks the limits of the operation.

The definitive decision has not been made. The internal debate will continue over the next few months. The militants will have to assess whether the sum of forces guarantees access to the town hall or if it is advisable to maintain their own brand despite the risk of exclusion.

4.58% of the votes in 2023 marked the CUP's recent electoral ceiling in the city.
