The Paeria will incorporate artificial intelligence into the surveillance and traffic control cameras of the Guardia Urbana de Lleida with the aim of reducing police response times and expanding coverage in sensitive areas of the city. The mayor, Fèlix Larrosa, announced the measure after presiding over the meeting of the corps' commanders.
The deployment comes as the City Council plans to increase technological capacity and personnel in the coming years, although the Asigull union has called for more officers to patrol. Larrosa maintains that the current distribution of the corps responds to the needs of each unit, in a city that has nearly 250 urban police officers and aims to reach 300.
The first phase will bring artificial intelligence to 70 cameras in the Barri Antic
The first phase of the plan will integrate artificial intelligence into 70 cameras, most of them located in the Barri Antic, to perform predictive traffic analysis. Afterwards, the system will be expanded to 120 cameras within the same technological upgrade.
Larrosa links this technical leap to the Local Security Plan, which the municipal government places at 74% implementation. The contract has been awarded to Alphanet Security Systems.
"With this system, immediate response time to incidents on public roads could be reduced by up to 25% and investigation time by up to 40%" - Fèlix Larrosa, mayor of Lleida, Lleida City Council
The city currently has 250 cameras, and the municipal projection is to reach 350. Within this immediate expansion, Lleida will install 37 new cameras in l'Horta, with 32 license plate readers and five surveillance cameras.
To this deployment will be added 50 new cameras in the Barri Antic and nine at the entrances and exits of Lleida, with the reinforcement concentrated in both the historic center and the access points to the capital of Segrià.
More than 100 officers will cover the Aplec with the support of 130 private security guards
The announcement was made on the eve of the Aplec del Caragol, for which the Guardia Urbana will deploy more than 100 officers from tonight until Sunday afternoon. The operation will be completed by 130 private security personnel hired by the organization.
Roberto Santaeufemia, spokesperson for the Guardia Urbana, detailed that the officers will monitor the interior and exterior of the venue and the leisure areas. The operation will also include alcohol checks, as confirmed by the mayor.
Regarding the staff, Larrosa stated that the municipal objective is for the Guardia Urbana to reach 300 officers in the coming years. The mayor added that the assignment of agents to the different units is done based on detected needs.
The immediate staff reference that the Paeria handles places the corps at almost 250 urban officers, while more than 100 agents will be assigned to the Aplec del Caragol until Sunday afternoon.
