An 89-year-old resident of Alfarràs died hours after being run over by a car on Balmes avenue, inside this town in Segrià. The accident occurred at 1:15 p.m. on Saturday, on the urban stretch of the C 26, when the man was crossing the road for reasons that the Catalan police are now investigating.
The victim, identified as F.G.G., suffered serious injuries. He/She presented severe injuries, among them a cranial trauma. After initial attention at the scene by paramedics, he/she was transferred to the Arnau de Vilanova hospital in Lleida, where he/she died hours later.
Investigation open in the traverse of the C 26
Ambulances from the Medical Emergencies System and patrols of the Mossos d'Esquadra moved to Balmes avenue. The Regional Traffic Area of the Mossos has taken charge of the investigation to clarify the circumstances of the hit-and-run.
The accident raises to four the people deceased this year in traffic accidents in the regions of Lleida. The figure stands one below that recorded in the same period last year.
The other fatal accidents of this year in Lleida
The other three fatal accidents accounted for so far in the demarcation had occurred in La Noguera. Two of them took place in Artesa de Segre, on the C 14 and on the C 26, both in February and in head-on collisions.
The third fatal accident was registered in Ponts on March 17, when a motorcyclist lost his life in a collision with a truck.
Two more serious accidents during Saturday
The day also left two other serious traffic accidents in the Lleida demarcation. On the C 12, as it passed through Llardecans, a head-on collision between a van and a car caused four injured, one of them seriously.
A woman traveling in the van was evacuated by helicopter to Vall d"Hebron hospital in Barcelona. In Alins, on the L 510, there was a road departure with two injured people, one of them serious, who was transferred by air to Arnau de Vilanova hospital.
The sequence of accidents on Saturday once again places attention on the Lleida road network, with one fatal victim in an urban crossing and several seriously injured on roads of the demarcation in just a few hours.
