A sheet/plate was blown away yesterday by the wind at La Noguera campsite, in Sant Llorenç de Montgai, within the municipality of Camarasa, and left three injured people, a 60-year-old woman and two minors. The incident occurred in the middle of a day of strong gale, with gusts that reached 92 kilometers per hour in Montsec.

The Firefighters received the alert around 11:42 hours. An ambulance from the Medical Emergencies System transferred one of the injured, a minor, in a less serious condition to the Arnau de Vilanova hospital in Lleida. The other two affected suffered injuries from cuts.

A metal structure was thrown out by a gust of wind

The incident occurred when a client was setting up his caravan and an awning with a metal structure to delimit his camping area. At that moment, one of the gusts lifted one of the panels and the piece impacted against several people who were passing nearby.

"When one of the gusts of wind has lifted one of the sheets and has impacted against the customers who were passing by nearby" - Cel Feliu, spokesperson of the sector in Lleida

Cel Feliu, owner of La Noguera campsite, specified that the injuries were cuts caused by the sheet metal. He also explained that in campsites this type of elements usually go fixed to the ground with tensioners and pieces that, in situations of extreme wind, can end up detaching.

A very intense wind episode in Ponent

Feliu stated that he did not remember an episode of wind of this intensity since storm Glòria in 2020. During the morning, furthermore, at the campsite the ornamental lighting unexpectedly turned on and then had to be turned off.

"These are things that happen in the facilities when gusts of such strength are recorded" - Cel Feliu, spokesperson for the sector in Lleida

La Generalitat had already warned on Saturday of the gale and of the snowfalls, and sent messages to several comarcas of Ponent and of Girona. The episode left the strongest gusts in the Pyrenees and forced the Bombers to make numerous call-outs throughout the day.

Tracking the status of those affected

From the Camarasa Town Council it was indicated that Civil Protection informed the council of the incident and that they inquired about the condition of the injured. The incident occurred in a context of adverse weather that complicated the morning in different parts of the territory, although in this case the main consequence was the impact of a metallic piece in a passageway area of the campsite.
