An episode with blank gunshots generated tension this Monday afternoon on Doctora Castells street, in the Cappont neighborhood of Lleida, after several neighbors reported detonations in the middle of the public street.
The call mobilized the Lleida Urban Guard, which activated a device in the area. When the officers arrived at the scene, they located a 77-year-old man sitting on a bench. He was carrying a weapon hidden between his belt and his back, so he was disarmed in a first containment action.
A blank gun with two detonator cartridges
After a first inspection, the agents verified that it was a blank-firing pistol. The magazine contained two detonator cartridges. No injuries or material damages derived from the incident were reported.
Once the situation was controlled, the man was transferred to a medical center to undergo a psychological evaluation.
Recent precedent at the same point of Cappont
The incident occurred practically in the same place where last October a firearm crime was registered in the middle of the street. Then, a 78-year-old man shot and killed his 47-year-old son-in-law, and afterwards called the Mossos d'Esquadra to voluntarily surrender with the weapon used.
That investigation pointed to family disagreements as the origin of the events and ruled out any connection with the victim's profession. Monday's incident left no injured people, although it again caused concern among the residents of this point in Cappont due to the proximity with that recent precedent.
