The Ponent Penitentiary Centre in Lleida has 81 inmates convicted of gender-based violence as their main offense, according to data from April released by the Ministry of Justice. To this figure, another 42 inmates deprived of liberty for violating sentences or measures such as restraining and communication orders are added.

The increase also appears in the courts. So far this year, the judicial headquarters have issued 247 final judgments for gender-based violence, 11% more than in the same previous period, while as of May 19, 151 precautionary measures, twelve search and arrest warrants, two authorizations to use technological localization instruments, and six pre-trial detentions had already been agreed upon.

Seven out of ten convicted in Ponent serve sentences of up to five years

The majority of inmates imprisoned for these types of crimes in the Lleida prison are serving relatively short sentences within the penal scale. Seven out of ten prisoners have sentences of up to five years in prison, while ten are serving between five and ten years, eight between ten and fifteen, and three exceed fifteen years.

Within that group are also the most serious cases. Eight inmates are serving sentences for completed or attempted homicide within the couple relationship, and one is convicted of murder with a sentence of more than fifteen years.

By age, the group with the most convicted individuals is concentrated between 31 and 50 years old, with 141 people. Next are 50 people between 18 and 30 years old, 42 over 50, and one minor.

Lleida courts maintain 19 protection orders for victims active

The judicial response is not limited to final convictions. In the Lleida regions, 26 protection orders for victims have been processed and 19 remain active, in parallel to the precautionary measures and pre-trial detentions ordered by the courts.

This deployment coincided in recent days with the institutional reaction to the murder of a 33-year-old woman in Figueres. Public workers from the Generalitat de Catalunya observed a minute of silence in rejection of the crime.

The event was attended by the Government delegate in Lleida, Núria Gil, along with officials from Equality, Interior, Justice, and Health, as well as the Government's sub-delegate in Lleida, José Crespín.
