Lleida has reduced cocaine consumption by almost 30% detected in wastewater during 2024, although it remains among the 16 European cities with the highest levels in the study by the European Union Drugs Agency.

The latest report places consumption at 0.62 grams daily per thousand inhabitants, compared to 0.87 grams the previous year. Despite that drop, the capital of Segrià maintains a prominent position in the analyzed ranking and occupies third place among the five cities of the State included in the study.

Lleida remains in the top part of the European study

The data places Lleida at a cocaine consumption level similar to that of Lisbon, with 0.625 grams, and Zagreb, with 0.67. It is above cities like Budapest, with 0.31 grams, and Rome, with 0.47, but still far from higher records such as those of Antwerp, with 1.99 grams, Amsterdam, with 1.2, and Brussels, with 1.18.

In the state comparison, Tarragona tops the list with 1.48 grams daily per thousand inhabitants. Behind appear Castellón, with 752 milligrams, Lleida, with 0.62 grams, Santiago de Compostela, with 609 milligrams, and Barcelona, with 349 milligrams.

Drop in amphetamine and rebound of MDMA

The report also detects changes in other substances. In Lleida, amphetamine consumption drops to 42.25 milligrams daily per thousand inhabitants, which represents a fall of almost five points.

In contrast, MDMA or ecstasy rises to 42.47 milligrams per thousand inhabitants. The increase is significant, as the registered level almost quadruples that of the previous period.

The analyses, furthermore, have stopped detecting methamphetamine in the city's wastewater, a fact that contrasts with the increase observed in ketamine.

Ketamine grows in the latest record

The ketamine consumption index in Lleida stood in 2025 at 10.61 milligrams daily per thousand inhabitants. That figure represents an increase of 19.6% compared to 2024 and confirms an upward trend in this substance within the city.

The map left by the report thus draws an unequal evolution in Lleida, with a clear drop in cocaine and amphetamine, the disappearance of traces of methamphetamine, and an advance of MDMA and ketamine that maintains attention on drug consumption in the Lleida capital.
