The Meteorological Service of Catalonia has activated warnings for intense rains and torrential downpours for Monday afternoon and Tuesday. Meteorological models predict the formation of storm clouds from midday that will unleash with force in various parts of Catalan territory.
Precipitation may reach up to 20 liters per square meter in periods of only 30 minutes. This intensity poses a significant risk to road mobility and urban management in the affected areas.
Widespread alert on Monday afternoon
During Monday's day until mid-morning, scattered showers are likely in the Pyrenees and western Pre-Pyrenees. The situation will change radically from the afternoon when showers are expected in the Pyrenees, Pre-Pyrenees, western third, interior of the eastern half, and prelitoral.
All regions of central Catalonia, Poniente, as well as the southern third and Empordà are on alert. There are alerts activated in dozens of regions from Empordà to Pallars and Montsià.
The probability of affectation will be lower on the central and northern coast during Monday afternoon. The intensity of the phenomena will be between weak and moderate, and at times strong in the afternoon.
Precipitation amounts will accumulate between scarce and not very abundant, locally abundant in points of the interior of the eastern half and the rest of the pre-coastal area. In some points, the showers will be accompanied by thunderstorms and hail.
On Tuesday the risk shifts to the coast
After a morning marked by clouds on Tuesday, showers and storms will form again in the afternoon. Tuesday's phenomena will affect the interior of the northeast quadrant, as well as the rest of the Pyrenees and Pre-Pyrenees.
The rains from these places may reach the coast and the rest of the southern third on Tuesday. On Tuesday afternoon, the coastal and pre-coastal regions will be on alert.
The phenomena of Tuesday will often be accompanied by storms and at times by hail or sleet. The population must exercise extreme caution due to the possible fall of stones and reduced visibility.
The situation should stabilize on Wednesday although starting Thursday the rains could return. Atmospheric instability remains the protagonist on the Catalan meteorological map for the coming days.
