Two young people who were exercising and a Mossos d'Esquadra officer rescued two stranded dolphins early this Monday on Sant Pol beach, in Sant Feliu de Guíxols. The animals, two cetaceans of the pilot whale species, were left next to the sand and could be returned to the sea after a quick intervention coordinated through 112.

The alert was received around eight in the morning, when a woman saw the two stranded dolphins and alerted the emergency phone number. From there, 112 mobilized the Mossos d'Esquadra and a patrol was dispatched to the area to intervene.

Intervention in the water on Sant Pol beach

A Mossos agent and two young people who were on the beach doing sport entered the water to act on the animals. The maneuver was carried out with the remote support of the Foundation for the Conservation and Recovery of Marine Animals, which followed the operation from the first moment.

The CRAM authorized the intervention after reviewing video images of the two stranded pilot whales. Based on that analysis, it indicated how to correctly reintroduce the animals into the water and what the appropriate orientation should be to facilitate their exit offshore.

Rescue governed by the protocol

After correcting the position of the cetaceans, the participants in the rescue managed to get them to resume the correct direction. As was explained after the operation, with a small push they were able to head back out to sea.

The Sant Feliu de Guíxols City Council pointed out that the rescue was carried out with speed and respecting the action protocol in these cases. The council added that, through 112, CRAM was alerted and that it was this foundation that supervised the rescue.

The two pilot whales were able to return to the sea after the joint operation on Sant Pol beach, in an intervention resolved in a few minutes and under specialized supervision.
