Girona gained 10,417 jobs in May, bringing Social Security affiliation to 389,696 people, the highest figure for this month in the province. The boost from the start of the tourist season also reduced unemployment by 2.51%, leaving 26,143 people unemployed, 652 fewer than in April.
The improvement in the labor market, however, maintains a clear dependence on the services sector. Of the 652 people who left the unemployment rolls in May, 584 found work in the tertiary sector, which also accounts for 18,209 of the 26,143 registered unemployed in the Girona regions.

The decrease in unemployment affected all sectors, although with wide differences. In addition to the 584 people rehired in services, construction reduced unemployment by 34 people, agriculture by 30, and industry by 17, while seven people with no previous registered occupation found employment.
In annual terms, the province also shows favorable evolution. Employment offices count 1,631 fewer unemployed people than in May 2025, which is equivalent to a drop of 5.87%.
Furthermore, Girona's monthly decrease was slightly above the Catalan average. In Catalonia, unemployment fell by 2.19%, while in Barcelona the drop was 2.04%, in Tarragona 2.59%, and in Lleida 2.99%.
Affiliation marked a May record with 389,696 contributors
The Girona labor market closed May with 389,696 Social Security affiliates, 2.74% more than in April. Compared to the same month in 2025, the province adds 8,298 contributors, an increase of 2.17%.
This increase in employment coincided with a rise in hiring. During May, 24,922 contracts were signed in the province, 1,286 more than the previous month.
Within this volume, 12,688 contracts were permanent during May. This figure represents a monthly increase of 5.44%.
Women account for 15,004 unemployed and those under 25 are 1,749
By profile, women represent 57.39% of unemployment in the province. In total, 15,004 women are on the lists compared to 11,139 men.
The distribution by sectors confirms the weight of the tertiary sector in Girona's labor market, with 18,209 unemployed. This is followed by industry with 3,044, construction with 2,089, agriculture with 539, and a group of 2,262 people with no previous registered employment.
In the Girona regions, employment offices also include 1,749 people under 25 years of age.
