The Girona Housing Union completed its first year of activity on May 25 with twelve evictions stopped out of the fifteen it tried to halt in the city and its surroundings. The organization, created in 2025, has also intervened in 66 housing cases and has extended its activity to eight neighborhoods in Girona and eleven municipalities in the province.

The balance sheet presents a paradox in Girona. While the entity managed to halt most of the evictions it tried to stop, one of the most recent cases ended last week with a cardiac arrest of the affected person during a new eviction attempt, which required the intervention of emergency services.

The union stopped twelve evictions and one of the latest ended with a medical emergency

In the summer of 2024, about seventy people gathered on Carrer de les Agudes, in Can Gibert, to try to prevent an eviction. That eviction was not avoided and ended up being carried out in April 2025, in one of the episodes that marked the first months of the collective's activity.

Later, in March, the entity did manage to stop an eviction on Carrer del Carme. Last week, another attempt once again focused attention on the pressure in these types of processes when the affected person suffered a cardiac arrest and needed emergency assistance.

During this first year, the union has organized six housing blocks with housing conflicts in different parts of the city. Its area of operation includes Pont Major, Vila-Roja, Barri Vell, Sant Narcís, Santa Eugènia, Carme-Vista Alegre, Pedret, and Can Gibert.

The entity has managed 56 cases with large property owners

The majority of the files handled by the organization correspond to conflicts with large holders. Of the 66 housing cases managed, 56 affect large property owners, six affect small property owners, and four affect public administration.

By typology, the main volume is concentrated in occupations, with 39 cases. Added to these are 25 rental problems and one case of homelessness, which outlines an activity focused on situations of loss or precarious access to housing.

Outside of Girona, assistance has also reached eleven municipalities in the province, including Figueres, Blanes, Olot, and Banyoles. The list also includes Sant Feliu de Guíxols, Vilablareix, Palafrugell, Sant Antoni de Calonge, La Bisbal d'Empordà, Caldes de Malavella, and La Jonquera.

In parallel, the organization has carried out 36 housing advisories and seven political assemblies. The entity defines these meetings as spaces for training and debate to improve its political work.

The balance of the first year also includes a concrete organizational figure: the union has advised people from eleven municipalities in the province and reached 36 housing advisories since its founding on May 25, 2025.
