A school experiment has ended with three minors injured this Wednesday in Porqueres. The activity, which reproduced the eruption of a volcano through a chemical reaction, did not go as expected and caused an explosion or deflagration, an aspect that the Mossos d'Esquadra are keeping under investigation.
Police investigation underway
The event occurred during a practice in which vinegar and sodium bicarbonate are mixed, common products in this type of educational experiment. On occasion, soap is also added to increase the foam and visual effect. The reaction was supposed to release carbon dioxide bubbles and generate foam, but the mixture reacted unexpectedly.
The Mossos d'Esquadra have opened proceedings to clarify the exact circumstances of the incident. For the moment, it has not been officially confirmed if the cause has been an explosion or a deflagration.
Recent Background in the province of Girona
This type of experiment had already caused a similar incident in the province. In July 2023, in a summer camp in Brunyola, a reaction with baking soda, vinegar, and sanitary alcohol ended with four minors between 9 and 12 years old with burns after a deflagration.
The authorities keep the investigation open to determine if parallels exist between both cases and if it is necessary to review the security protocols in this type of activities aimed at minors
