The Mossos d"Esquadra have arrested three men aged 40, 46 and 47 for an alleged attempted homicide after the fire declared in the early hours of Monday in an apartment at number 21 Santander street, in the Sant Narcís neighborhood of Girona. The investigation suggests that the arrested individuals would have locked another man in the dwelling and then would have set him on fire.
The fire alarm arrived around 3:30 a.m. When the Firefighters accessed the property, a five-story building, they found the fire fully developed. To the scene, nine Firefighter units were dispatched, in addition to personnel from the Girona Municipal Police and the Mossos d"Esquadra.
Rescue by the balcony and transfer to the Trueta
The victim was able to be rescued by the Firefighters through the balcony of the home. The man suffered minor injuries due to smoke inhalation and was attended to by the SEM, which transferred him by ambulance to the Josep Trueta hospital in Girona.
According to health sources, the injured person remains admitted in mild condition at Josep Trueta hospital.
Preventive eviction of neighbors
Preventively, 35 residents of the affected block were evacuated. Temporary confinement of the homes located on both sides of the building was also ordered while the emergency intervention lasted.
Once the situation was controlled, the residents were able to return to their homes.
Detained during Monday
The arrests were carried out throughout Monday, after the Investigation Unit of the Girona police station took statements from several witnesses and looked for clues to confirm what happened.
According to the published information, the main hypothesis is that the three arrested individuals would have locked the man in the apartment, without ruling out that it was inside a room, as a result of a disagreement related to some illegal activity. That dispute would have allegedly led to the fire.
The three detainees are expected to appear before the court this Wednesday. The Mossos have confirmed the arrests and are keeping the investigation open.
