The storm Leonardo will leave scattered rains and strong surf on the Catalan coast starting Thursday, according to meteorological models and warnings issued by the Servei Meteorològic de Catalunya. The storm will especially affect the coast, with particular impact on the Maresme and the coast of Baix Llobregat, where waves over 2.5 meters are expected
Pre-alert of the PROCICAT plan for strong surf
Civil Protection has activated the pre-alert phase of the PROCICAT plan due to the forecast of rough seas along the entire Catalan coast. The warnings affect from Empordà to Tarragonès. The Meteorological Service of Catalonia has activated yellow and orange level warnings in practically the entire coastal strip, including the sea of Empordà, Selva, Barcelonès, Garraf, and Tarragonès
The areas most exposed to the maritime storm will be Maresme and Baix Llobregat, where the greatest impact of the waves is expected. Protecció Civil has asked citizens to "exercise extreme caution" due to the risk of waves over 2.5 meters high
Light and short-lived rains
The forecasts indicate that precipitation will begin on Thursday morning in parts of the interior and west of Catalonia, progressively extending to other areas during the day. However, meteorologists emphasize that, unlike what happened in Andalusia or Portugal, in Catalonia light rainfall with unimportant accumulations are expected. No specific rain warnings have been activated, as instability is expected to last only on Thursday
Weather Evolution Tracking
The Leonardo storm is the twelfth phenomenon of this type registered in Catalonia during the current season. According to the latest updates, Leonardo will begin to dissipate starting Friday. Starting Saturday, new storms are expected to arrive on the Iberian Peninsula.
"It is important to stay up to date with the evolution of these fronts, given their intensity and the impact on territories already hit by the rains" - Meteorologists, Servei Meteorològic de Catalunya
Emergency services recommend consulting weather updates and following the instructions of local authorities to avoid unnecessary risks in coastal areas
