The Girona City Council will keep the Tarlà hanging in Carrer de l'Argenteria to support Girona FC in the last league match against Elche at Montilivi, a game in which the team is fighting to stay in the First Division. The figure has been wearing a club jersey with its name on the back since Tuesday.
The decision extends the presence on the street of one of the most recognizable symbols of the Barri Vell beyond the usual spring calendar. While the figure is usually dismantled in mid-May, at the end of Girona, Temps de Flors, this year it will remain visible for a reason unrelated to the festival and linked to the team's season finale.
The council extends the Tarlà's presence for the decisive match at Montilivi
In addition to keeping the Tarlà in l'Argenteria, the council has hoisted the Girona FC flag on the mast in Plaça de Catalunya instead of the usual senyera. The mayor, Lluc Salellas i Vilar, has also presented the team with a letter of support and a copy of the book Autobiografia de Girona.
In that letter, Salellas conveyed the institutional and citizen support to the locker room before the match against Elche.
"You will not jump onto the field alone, because an entire city runs behind you. From Plaça Catalunya to the Tarlà on the Rambla, the streets are dyed white and red to push you towards victory. Each of the people who will fill the stands and those who will cheer you on from home will be one more player in support of your determination. Good luck, accuracy, and encouragement, we are with you" - Lluc Salellas i Vilar, Mayor of Girona
Quim Ayats Bartrina, deputy mayor and councilor for Culture, framed the measure within the symbolic value of the figure in the city. The councilor explained that the city council wanted to keep it on the street at a relevant moment for Girona and as a gesture of support for the team.
The Tarlà had already completed 69 hours of rotation between April and May
The figure is usually hung in mid-April for the Festes de Primavera and dismantled in mid-May, when Girona, Temps de Flors ends. On this occasion, it will remain on display for a few more days, although without its usual movement.
Ayats specified that the Tarlà will remain hanging but will not rotate during these days. The change coincides with the premiere this spring of the fifth version of the figure, designed to be lighter and more resistant and to incorporate new technological solutions along with artisanal finishes.
Between April 18 and May 18, the Tarlà turned in l'Argenteria street for 69 hours in total.
