Girona will remain under a yellow alert this Monday due to rainfall on a day marked by instability in northeastern Catalonia. The State Meteorological Agency maintains the alert during the afternoon, when heavy and persistent showers are expected in that part of the territory.
The forecast comes after a winter that has left Catalan reservoirs at 91.5% of their capacity and the soil at its maximum moisture level. This combination places the risk of intense rain on ground already saturated with water, while Catalonia as a whole faces the end of the week with slightly lower temperatures and the possibility of storms also on Sunday afternoon.
Girona maintains the yellow alert and the northeast expects persistent rain
During Monday afternoon, instability will be concentrated mainly in northeastern Catalonia. In this strip, which includes the counties of Girona, the forecast points to locally heavy and persistent showers.
On the Catalan coast, on the other hand, the rains will tend to be concentrated in the first half of the day. The distribution of precipitation will thus result in a different day between the coast and the interior of the northeast, where the most continuous episodes are expected from the afternoon onwards.
In addition to the rain, fog banks may appear early in the morning in mountainous areas. Weak frosts are also expected at the highest altitudes of the Pyrenees.
The anticyclone prevails on the Peninsula, but Catalonia will remain with cool weather
While the Azores anticyclone will tend to stabilize the weather in much of the Peninsula and the Balearic Islands, Catalonia will remain outside this respite. The forecast for the coming days maintains a more variable scenario with cool weather in the Catalan territory.
Looking towards the end of the week, the forecast points to a slight drop in temperatures and the possibility of storms during Sunday afternoon. The weather evolution will thus maintain instability in Catalonia despite the expected improvement in other areas of the State.
The starting point for this episode is also unusual compared to previous months, as Catalan reservoirs have reached 91.5% of their capacity after the winter.
