The reduction of waiting lists does not achieve that 48% of applicants pass the practical test in Girona

Girona closed 2025 with 48% of passes in the practical, two points more than in 2024 but still below 50% and the rest of Catalonia. The increase in exams and the decrease in lists did not manage to change the trend.

Girona registered 48% pass rates in the practical driving test in 2025, with 8,993 passes and 9,830 fails, according to the General Statistical Yearbook of the DGT. The figure improves by two points compared to 46% in 2024, but keeps the province below 50% and at the lower end of the state ranking.

The paradox is that the backlog is starting to ease while the pass rate still fails to reach half. Girona was the only Catalan province below 50% in the practical test, while Lleida reached 54% and Barcelona and Tarragona were at 52%.

Girona conducted 1,225 more exams and remained below 50%

In total, the province conducted 18,823 driving tests in 2025, compared to 17,598 the previous year. The increase in activity did not decisively alter the final result, as the pass rate only rose by two points.

With that 48%, Girona ranked 14th in the state ranking, tied with Segovia, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, and Zamora. Furthermore, it fell below the Spanish average, which was set at 50%.

Within Catalonia, the gap was also clear. While Girona was the only Catalan province failing to meet that threshold, Lleida led the regional data with a 54% pass rate in driving tests, and Barcelona and Tarragona shared 52%.

Driving schools link the easing of waiting lists to the reinforcement of examiners

Waiting lists for the practical test began to decrease in March 2025 after several years of collapse. At the examination center in the capital, there were still about 6,500 students pending, although the figure was already below the peak of 8,000 reached the previous summer.

"the waiting lists to take the practical test were beginning to recede after years of collapse" - Xènia Ijsselstein, president of the Association of Driving Schools of the Girona regions

Ijsselstein attributed this change to the reinforcement of staff. In another statement, the president of the association of driving schools in the Girona regions maintained that the improvement is mainly due to the increase in examining personnel, a demand that the sector had been making for a long time.

Theoretical tests also increased. Girona went from 17,062 exams in 2024 to 18,590 in 2025, meaning 1,528 more, and maintained a 52% pass rate, one point above the state average of 51%.

Ceuta led the state ranking with a 64% pass rate

The comparison with the rest of the State places Girona in a low-middle range. Ceuta topped the classification with 64% of passes, followed by Albacete and Badajoz with 63%, Soria with 62% and Ávila with 61%.

At the bottom of the ranking appear Las Palmas with 37%, Ourense with 41% and Balearic Islands, Córdoba and Palencia with 43%. Girona was above these provinces, but remained far from the territories with the best results.

Xènia Ijsselstein, president of the Association of Driving Schools of the Girona regions, stated that the improvement in waiting lists is mainly due to the increase in examining staff, a historic request.
