The Government will declare the future Clínic-Universitat de Barcelona Health Campus and the Girona Health Region Campus of General Interest next Tuesday, a decision with which it seeks to accelerate two of its main health projects. In the case of Girona, the move comes when the architectural design has already been awarded and while the administration is also preparing how to finance a project planned at 740 million euros.

The tension of the project lies in this dual speed. While the Executive promises absolute political and institutional priority and faster urban planning procedures, the new Girona complex still faces two years of drafting before the preliminary, basic, and executive projects can be finalized.

The declaration will give urban planning and electrical priority to the two campuses

The Consell Executiu will approve this declaration of general interest for the future Clínic-Universitat de Barcelona Health Campus and for that of the Girona Health Region. The Government maintains that the measure represents a step forward in positioning both plans among its priority actions.

In addition to the political weight, the decision will have concrete administrative effects. The declaration will allow for accelerated urban planning procedures and will give priority to connection permits and capacity on the state electricity grid.

The Executive frames the two projects as a transformation of the hospital, teaching, and research system in Catalonia. In Girona, this transformation will affect both healthcare provision and university and business activity linked to the health sector.

Infraestructures.cat awarded the design of the complex between Girona and Salt

Infraestructures.cat has already definitively awarded the architectural project of the Girona Health Region Health Campus to the UTE formed by PINEARQ, SLP & Brullet de Luna i associats and SLP & PEGI Engineering, SL. The team has two years to draft all the preliminary documentation for the work.

The complex will be built on land between Girona and Salt. It will include the new Doctor Josep Trueta University Hospital of Girona, teaching, research, and innovation spaces promoted by the University of Girona, and a hub for health companies.

The planning reserves a much larger scale than the current one. The project will occupy 175,000 m² of land with a buildable area of up to 320,000 m², of which 130,000 m² are classified as facilities.

The functional plan assigns between 170,000 and 175,000 m² to the new hospital. To that surface will be added the current 50,000 m² of the Parc Hospitalari Martí i Julià, while another 59,725 m² will be allocated to university, research, and innovation uses.

Margin is also reserved for later expansions. The design foresees more than 80,000 m² for future growth of the complex.

The new Trueta foresees 31 operating rooms and 136 emergency bays

The planned expansion affects the central areas of the hospital. The number of operating rooms will go from 19 to 31 after the work and could reach 33 with the space reservation.

Interventional activity will also grow. The rooms will go from 12 to 18 and could reach 24 in a phase of maximum expansion.

In hospitalization, the new facility will start with 791 beds compared to the current 674, with a ceiling of 855. Emergency will go from 84 bays to 136 and could reach 162 at the time of maximum occupancy.

The planned investment for the Campus de Salut of the Regió Sanitària Girona amounts to 740 million euros, while the Departament d'Economia i Finances is preparing an economic and financial plan to analyze financing alternatives that ensure the sustainability of public finances.
