The Girona Court of First Instance has sent four of those arrested in the operation against marijuana trafficking deployed in several municipalities in the district to provisional pre-trial detention without bail. Another two investigated individuals have been released on bail of 150,000 euros, while ten more have been released with precautionary measures after appearing before the judicial authorities.
The case highlights a significant difference between the police scope of the operation and the initial judicial response. Of the 26 people arrested in the operation, only 16 have appeared before the judge, and among them are those entering prison, those released on high bail, and those with periodic appearances and passport confiscation.
The operation dismantled eleven plantations in Girona and La Selva
The operation has made it possible to dismantle eleven marijuana plantations in different parts of the district and has resulted in 26 arrests. Investigators place the core of the action in the Font de la Pólvora and Vila-roja neighborhoods of Girona, two of the enclaves where some of the searches were concentrated.
In addition to the capital of Girona, the Mossos d'Esquadra operated in Riudarenes, Sils, Caldes de Malavella, and Brunyola, in La Selva. The searches also extended to Cassà de la Selva, Llagostera, Bescanó, Celrà, Quart, and Salt, in Gironès, as well as l'Escala, in l'Alt Empordà.
The deployment mobilized about 600 agents. The DIC, GEI, BRIMO, ARRO, Scientific Police, Canine Unit, Air Support, Central Dispatch, and USC participated in the operation.
The court is investigating money laundering, weapons, and electricity fraud
The judicial investigation is not limited to the cultivation and distribution of marijuana. The case includes alleged crimes against public health of significant importance, money laundering, criminal organization, and electricity fraud.
The Mossos d'Esquadra also link the dismantled group to weapons possession. This scope explains why investigation units, public order units, and tactical support units intervened in the operation in various simultaneous searches.
Among the 16 arrested individuals who have appeared before the judicial authorities, ten have been released with precautionary measures. The court has imposed on them the prohibition of leaving the territory, bi-weekly appearances, and the confiscation of their passports.
The most severe judicial resolution currently affects four investigated individuals, for whom the Court of Instance of Girona has decreed provisional detention without bail, and two others, who can only avoid entering prison if they pay a bail of 150,000 euros.
