Girona closed 2025 as the second province in the State with the most people detained or investigated for property occupations, with 982 linked by police to these events. This figure places it only behind Barcelona, which leads the statistics with 4,684, and ahead of Madrid, Tarragona, and Lleida.
The paradox is that the Girona regions registered fewer known occupations than a year earlier. The Interior Ministry counted 719 cases in 2025, 23.5% less than the 940 in 2024, but Girona still climbed to second place nationally in the number of detainees and investigated individuals.
Girona added 982 investigated individuals despite a 23.5% drop in known cases
The difference between these two indicators is due to the fact that a single incident can result in several people being identified or detained. This is why Girona ranks fifth in known incidents, with 719, and at the same time second in detained or investigated individuals.
On a monthly basis, the figure is equivalent to 82 people per month or almost three per day related to occupations. In the 2025 national ranking, the province also appears fourth in clarified incidents and fourth in victimizations.
Clarified incidents dropped from 778 to 595 during the last year. Victimizations also decreased, going from 462 to 401, which represents a reduction of 13.2%.
The national statistics distinguish between home invasion, which refers to unauthorized entry or presence in a dwelling, and property usurpation, which affects apartments, buildings, or premises without residential use.
Seven arrested in Empuriabrava and three identified in the Pedret neighborhood
One of the most recent incidents occurred this week in the Biblos sector of Empuriabrava. The Local Police of Castelló d'Empúries and the Mossos d'Esquadra arrested six men and one woman between the ages of 18 and 32 for an attempted occupation of an unoccupied dwelling.
The events began on a Tuesday around 10:30 PM, when a neighbor reported noises of breaking glass and suspicious movements. Hours later, around 3:30 AM, officers detected new activity, entered the property, evicted the occupants, and arrested seven people for an alleged crime of home invasion.
In the city of Girona, another case came to light on May 12 during a visit to appraise an apartment in the Pedret neighborhood. The Mossos d'Esquadra went to the property, identified three occupants, and they left the dwelling after collecting their belongings.
The owner of that flat in Pedret indicated that the occupants claimed to have paid 2,000 euros for the key to the dwelling.
