The Girona City Council has completed the restoration of the coat of arms of Queen Joana Enríquez located at the access gate to the Torre Gironella. The intervention ended on May 29, ten days after its start on May 19.
The piece, dated 1467 and protected as a Cultural Asset of National Interest, arrived at the intervention with superficial wear, accumulated dirt, small cracks, and some detachments. The tension of the project was to preserve a 15th-century element exposed at one of the city's heritage access points without replacing it, despite the visible deterioration of the stone.
The coat of arms showed cracks and detached fragments
At the beginning of May, the council commissioned the work to the company Conservació de Patrimoni 4restaura S.L. The restoration focused on stabilizing the conservation state of the work and slowing down the progression of the damage detected on the surface.
Technicians applied dry and wet cleaning, in addition to treating the cracks and consolidating the detached parts. The coat of arms is carved in nummulitic limestone from Girona and has approximate dimensions of 0.80 by 0.60 meters.
In the heraldic composition appear the three gules bars of the Royal Arms of Aragon, along with a castle in the upper right part and a rampant lion in the lower part.
The History Museum will incorporate a reproduction until November 2027
The municipal plan now involves creating a reproduction of the piece to integrate it into the exhibition Girona 2.100 years of history, 21 objects for 21 centuries, organized by the History Museum. The restored original is located at the access gate to the Torre Gironella, one of the heritage points of Girona's historical enclosure.
The exhibition is part of the Girona 2.100 cultural program and will remain open until November 1, 2027, with the planned incorporation of this reproduction of Joana Enríquez's coat of arms.
