The authorization of 133 battery containers clashes with soil protection in Sant Julià de Ramis

The Ministry for Ecological Transition has granted prior administrative authorization to the Glauco Almacena and La Farga BESS battery plants, projected between Vilademuls and Sant Julià de Ramis. The two facilities together have 203.778 MW of installed power, 518.324 MWh of storage capacity, and a total of 133 battery containers.

The processing is advancing, but construction cannot begin yet. The Glauco Almacena project clashes with the classification of special protection agricultural and forest land in Sant Julià de Ramis, while La Farga BESS only moved forward in Vilademuls after environmental objections and a modification of the initial design.

Glauco Almacena still awaits urban planning compatibility in Sant Julià de Ramis

Glauco Almacena, promoted by Energía Glauco SL, will have 55.384 MW of power and 221.536 MWh of capacity. The project includes 56 lithium iron phosphate battery containers and a 4.557-meter, 30 kV underground line to the Profar substation.

This line will cross the municipalities of Vilademuls and Sant Julià de Ramis. In the latter municipality, the city council warned that the installation is incompatible with special protection agricultural and forest land, so the developer is now processing the urban planning compatibility report.

Furthermore, the administrative construction authorization will not be granted until the project incorporates the conditions set out in the environmental reports, completes the public information procedures, and passes the review of the developer's legal, technical, and economic capacity.

La Farga BESS modified the project after environmental objections from Vilademuls

The second plant, driven by Cadaques Directorship SL, will have 148.394 MW of power and 296.788 MWh of capacity. The design includes 77 Tesla Megapack 2 XL containers, twenty transformer stations, and a 220 kV underground line to the La Farga substation of Red Eléctrica.

Vilademuls filed environmental objections against this installation during the processing. After the developer's response and the project modification, the city council expressed its agreement with the revised proposal.

The environmental assessment places La Farga BESS on a cultivated field in Vilademuls, between the AP-7 to the east and the A-2 to the west. The document also requires the incorporation of a green screen on the west facade to reduce the visibility of the plant.

Both Vilademuls and Sant Julià de Ramis are listed as high fire risk municipalities, although the specific area chosen for the project presents a low risk due to the absence of immediate arboreal vegetation. The area, nevertheless, borders a forest area with combustion potential.

The two facilities will be connected to the La Farga substation, one of Red Eléctrica's hubs for evacuating energy to the Girona transport network, and they concentrate 133 battery containers between both projects.
