The stairs of the Girona Cathedral will be one of the axes of Temps de Flors 2026 with a tribute to the Gaudí Year, which commemorates the centenary of the architect's death. The 71st edition of the floral exhibition will be held from May 9 to 17 and will bring together 141 projects spread across 113 spaces in the city.
The deputy mayor of Girona, Gemma Geis, has placed the Cathedral's proposal within the connections between Barcelona, the Sagrada Família, and Girona, and has remarked that it will also incorporate a social and cultural message. The staging of the stairs is conceived and coordinated by doctor and expert in Gaudí's work Teresa Vidal, and will also incorporate Gerundense mythology by Nuxu Perpinyà.
"It will be Gaudí with a more Girona touch" - Gemma Geis, deputy mayor of Girona
The tribute to Gaudí will not be limited to the Cathedral. In the basilica of Sant Feliu there will also be a reference to the Gaudí Year, within an edition that, in the words of the municipal government, also wants to maintain a sign of Catalan identity.
More bridges and more neighborhoods on the route
One of the novelties will be the decoration, for the first time simultaneously, of the four bridges connecting Barri Vell with Mercadal. Action will be taken on Peixateries Velles, Sant Agustí, d"en Gómez and Sant Feliu. Last year there was only a project on the Pont de les Peixateries Velles, while Sant Agustí and Sant Feliu had already hosted proposals in other editions.
"This year the four bridges coincide" - Gemma Geis, Deputy Mayor of Girona
The exhibition will also reinforce the Correu Vell square and expand its presence outside the historic center. For the first time, it will reach the Pont Major neighborhood with interventions in the Civic Center and the adjacent sports pavilion.
"Temps de Flors is not explained only from the center" - Gemma Geis, deputy mayor of Girona
"It has its roots in the neighborhoods" - Gemma Geis, Deputy Mayor of Girona
Tribute to Pau Casals in two spaces far from the center
Temps de Flors will also dedicate two projects to the 150th anniversary of Pau Casals' birth. One will be installed in the Jardí de la Pau, next to the Carles Rahola library, on Emili Grahit street. The other will be in Natàlia Molero i Lloret square, in the Devesa Güell neighborhood.
"The claim for peace is more necessary than ever" - Gemma Geis, Deputy Mayor of Girona
Recognition for Friends of Flowers
The inauguration of the exhibition will be on Saturday, May 9 at 11:30 AM in the gardens of dels Alemanys. During the event, the association Amics de les Flors de Girona will be honored. Geis has underlined the central role of the entity in the history of the festival and has remarked that he speaks of friends because almost all of its members are women.
"They are everything, they are our Bible" - Gemma Geis, deputy mayor of Girona
"They have grown the project in complicated times" - Gemma Geis, Deputy Mayor of Girona
"They are always there and have adapted and innovated to update Temps de Flors" - Gemma Geis, deputy mayor of Girona
The president of Amics de les Flors, Ana Maria Figa, will decorate the Arab Baths. In the previous edition, she was in charge of the Cathedral stairs.
Sponsors and extended hours
Among the sponsored spaces, CaixaBank will decorate the Carbonera after the change of locations of the main sponsors. BBVA will bring its proposal to the church of Sant Martí with a project focused on water and climate change. Reale will exhibit in the moat passage of the apse of the Cathedral and Freixenet will do so in the cloister of the Banys Àrabs.
During the nine days of the exhibition, the spaces can be visited between 9:30 AM and 9:00 PM, with extended hours as happened last year. Seventeen indoor spaces will be open until 11:00 PM from Sunday to Friday and until midnight on Saturdays. Among them are the church of Sant Lluc, the Centre Cultural la Mercè, the entrance of the Casino Gironí, the Museu d"Història de Girona, the pati de les Magnòlies, and Torre Gironella.
Access control and accessibility measures
The device foresees a perimeter closure of the Barri Vell to favor greater visitor flow. There will be six entry points and six exit points. Only two bridges will be two-way, Sant Agustí and Sant Feliu. The les Peixateries Velles bridge will be one-way towards the Llibertat promenade and en Gómez bridge will only allow passage towards the Independència square.
The parallel programming will maintain the small-format concerts and will add a "castellera" day and other activities. To this will be added a commercial and catering offer with decorated shop windows and gastronomic proposals inspired by flowers.
In the accessibility section, the organization will set up two Espai Calma points, one at CaixaFòrum and another at the Centre Cívic Barri Vell Mercadal. They will be specially designed for neurodivergent people and for breastfeeding women, although open to anyone who needs a break. A Rest Area will also be set up in the garden of l'Àngel, several areas with benches along the route, and an adapted itinerary for people with reduced mobility will be maintained.
