The Santa Cristina d"Aro City Council will study whether this summer it again limits the entry of non-local vehicles to the municipality during weekends, a measure it already applied last year to avoid traffic jams within the urban area.

The restriction was put in place at the beginning of May 2023 due to the arrival of cars coming from the Costa Brava that used the town as an alternative route to bypass the queues on the C 31. The objective was to prevent that through traffic from ending up generating traffic jams within the municipality.

The council will first observe Holy Week mobility

The council plans to analyze traffic behavior these days before making a decision for the summer campaign. From the Town Hall they point out that during this Holy Week the volume of cars will be reviewed and the convenience of recovering the measure will be assessed.

In contrast, the return operation does not generate a special concern in the municipality. The municipal forecast is that the departure of vehicles will occur progressively, without a specific concentration that ends up straining local traffic.

The precedent of last summer

The Local Police of Santa Cristina d"Aro was in charge of executing the access controls last year. The devices were placed in the municipality's roundabouts and filtered the entry of vehicles during the fixed periods.

While the measure was active, only residents or people who could prove a justified cause could access. With that system, the City Council sought to reduce the use of the municipality as a shortcut by drivers who were trying to avoid congestion on the main road network in the area.

The problem concentrates from Sant Joan

The traffic pressure does not usually appear strongly during Holy Week, but later on. At the City Council, they place the start of the problem at the end of June, coinciding with Sant Joan, when the arrival of vehicles increases steadily every weekend.

The decision about this summer will begin to be studied starting in May, when the council will evaluate what action is appropriate to adopt. For now, Santa Cristina d"Aro keeps an eye on the evolution of traffic in the coming weeks to determine if it repeats a formula it already used to protect the internal circulation of the municipality.
