The Palamós City Council has approved in the April plenary session a credit modification of 1,571,225 euros to enable the allocation for the second phase of reform of the promenade del Mar. The proposal went ahead with the votes of ERC and PSC, the abstention of Junts and the rejection of Som hi, the CUP and Vox.

The project for this second phase was already approved in July and now it must go out to public tender. The council also foresees to specify with the State how the financing for this new action will be distributed.

A pending performance after the renovation premiered in March

Palamós debuted at the end of March the renovated promenade after sixteen months of works and an investment of 6.6 million euros. Of that amount, 3 million arrived through the Next Generation funds.

The new phase will focus on the naturalization of the space located between the promenade and the beach, in the area of the old sauló car park, which will disappear. The objective is to recover the natural dune system and adapt this area with criteria that take into account climate change.

Dune recovery and removal of the most contaminated sand

The plan foresees removing the most contaminated layer of sand by the sauló dust and reusing it in the space of the old parking lot as the base of the new dunes. Afterwards, the next part will be stirred to bring out the cleaner sand.

The action also includes measures to favor the retention of sand and protect the future dune area. For this, natural wicker limits and fences with posts and rope will be installed.

Works planned after the tourist season

The works corresponding to this part of the reform are not expected to start until the tourist season has passed. Before, the City Council must tender the project and close with the State what part each administration will assume in the financing of the second phase.

With this step, the council gives continuity to the transformation of the promenade del Mar with an intervention focused on the environmental recovery of the coastal facade and on the reorganization of the space that until now occupied the parking lot next to the beach.
