A truck loaded with marble pieces overturned sideways on the AP-7 at the height of Vilafant, in the direction of Girona, after hitting the median around two-thirty in the morning this Wednesday. Part of the cargo was scattered on the roadway and caused collisions with some passenger cars.
The accident left no injuries, but it did cause a long disruption on one of the country's main roads. The two occupants of the truck were unharmed, although they were mechanically trapped inside the cabin and required the intervention of the Bombers de la Generalitat to be able to get out.
The overturn cut two lanes in each direction on the AP-7 in Vilafant
Patrols of the Mossos d'Esquadra de Trànsit, SEM personnel, and two units of the Bombers de la Generalitat moved to the scene of the accident. Emergency teams worked on rescuing the occupants, removing the cargo, and cleaning the road.
According to the Servei Català de Trànsit, the two occupants of the vehicle were unharmed. The loss of part of the marble on the highway complicated traffic for hours.
At first hour of the morning two lanes per direction remained cut off to remove the overturned truck and clean the roadway. That restriction generated traffic jams of more than two kilometers in this section of the AP-7, in the surroundings of Vilafant.
Traffic towards France did not return to normal until one in the afternoon
Traffic was fully reopened in the direction of France around one in the afternoon, once the work on the highway was finished. During the early morning and morning, some passenger cars collided with the marble pieces that had remained on the roadway after the overturn.
The Mossos d'Esquadra have opened an investigation to clarify why the truck ended up hitting the median before overturning sideways at this point on the AP-7.
The complete reopening of the France direction did not arrive until around one in the afternoon, after several hours with two lanes in each direction cut off on the AP-7 at the height of Vilafant.
