Josep Lluís Trapero, director of the Mossos d'Esquadra, announced yesterday in Lleida a strategic change to increase police presence in streets and squares. The objective is to reverse the feeling of insecurity through active prevention that complements statistical data.
The statement was made during the event for the Police Region Ponent Squads Day. Trapero admitted that they will work actively to reverse the perception of insecurity that affects a part of the citizenry after the recent crimes in Barcelona and Esplugues de Llobregat.
The Government opts for preventive visibility
The highest official of the Catalan police defended that security is not limited to crime figures. The regional Executive now prioritizes a model that guarantees peace of mind when walking in public spaces.
This new approach seeks to move from reaction to prevention. Agents will increase their visibility in parks and public transport without being invasive. The strategy includes improving communication to adjust citizen perception to objective reality.
To sustain this deployment, the Government maintains its commitment to expand the staff. 3,300 probationary civil servants will be incorporated into the current 20,035 members of the corps.
Police results in the Ponent region
Commissioner Josep Codina presented the district's reports. Crimes decreased by 3.7 percent, a trend that is consolidating in the first months of 2026.
The collaboration with local police resulted in 3,403 arrests during the last year. The operations allowed the dismantling of 30 marijuana plantations and the arrest of 64 people linked to organized crime.

The day also served to recognize the work of the agents. 240 commendations and 31 medals were awarded. Fourteen members of the ARRO received distinctions for the injuries suffered a year ago in the Lleida neighborhood of La Mariola.
Inspector Roderic Moreno imposed the badge and cap on the relatives of the agent who died last year. The police officer died from the shots of his father-in-law in the Cappont neighborhood.
