La Audiencia Nacional has agreed this Monday that the former president of the Generalitat Jordi Pujol not declare as accused in the trial being held against his family and several businessmen. The decision has been adopted after a new medical evaluation performed during the morning at the judicial headquarters.
Starting at 9:30 a.m., forensic doctors have visited Pujol to evaluate his condition. After that examination, they have concluded that he is not in physical or mental condition to testify nor to assume the charges for which he is requested nine years in prison.
The chamber maintains the criterion set in November
The magistrates of the court have also briefly interviewed Jordi Pujol before ruling. Finally, the chamber has reached the same conclusion that it had already ruled in November and has decided to exempt him from testifying in the trial.
The procedural consequence goes beyond that waiver. The court has agreed to exclude Jordi Pujol from the judicial case, so the procedure will continue without him on the bench.
The trial continues against his children and several businessmen
With this resolution, the case remains directed solely against his children and various businessmen. The trial thus continues with the rest of the accused, while the situation of the former president remains separated from the procedure due to the incapacity assessed by the forensic experts and assumed by the court.
