Residents of Barri Vell of Girona have reported the passage of vehicles in the prohibited direction on the street of the Beates, an access that some drivers use to enter the old town and avoid the control camera located in Plaça Catalunya. The circulation continues afterwards along Portal Nou street, which, in the opinion of the neighborhood, allows to bypass other access controls to the historic center.

The neighborhood association maintains that through this point private cars circulate without a neighborhood circulation distinctive and also vans and other goods vehicles that, allegedly, take advantage of this route to evade the current restrictions. The collective warns that the situation is frequently repeated in an area especially delicate due to its road characteristics.

A narrow street with poor visibility

The point indicated by the residents is located in a narrow single-lane stretch, with poor visibility and with a speed bump located on a 90-degree curve. The neighbors warn that this configuration further complicates traffic when a vehicle appears unexpectedly in the opposite direction.

The concern is not limited to the transit of passenger cars. The neighborhood entity assures that numerous goods vehicles that evade hourly restrictions also pass through the street, a situation that, they maintain, increases the risk in an environment already conditioned by the narrowness of the road and the lack of visual field.

Repeated complaints before the City Council

The residents state that they have transferred this problem to the Girona City Council both during the previous mandate and in the current one, without concrete measures having been adopted so far. They have also communicated the situation to the ombudswoman, who, according to them, has shown good disposition, although for the moment the incident remains unresolved.

Given the lack of changes, the association demands an intervention in the area. Among its proposals are reinforcing the signage, installing a visibility mirror, and placing a control camera similar to the one already operating in Plaça Catalunya, with the aim of preventing improper access and reducing danger in one of the most sensitive points of the Barri Vell.
