The housing block located at property 13 15 of Ronda Ferran Puig in Girona will begin its second phase of action after the eviction carried out last Monday. The main objective is to prevent any new attempt at occupation in a space that for two years concentrated the main neighborhood tensions in the area.

Security measures and meeting with the neighborhood

The Girona council convened some twenty residents this Thursday to inform them about the active deployment in the area. Local authorities detailed that a perimeter alarm has been launched along with constant night surveillance and a reinforced police presence. The meeting was attended by Mayor Lluc Salellas, Deputy Mayors Sergi Font and Sílvia Aliu, as well as Councilor Isaac Sànchez, who explained the planned roadmap for the coming weeks.

Alert for possible re-occupations

Official statements showed prudence regarding the possibility of new intrusions. Lluc Salellas warned that attempts to enter the block could still occur, as already happened on the first night after the cleanup operation. Given the concerns expressed by attendees, the mayor clarified that a new attempt to access is not dismissible, but stressed that the institutional priority lies in ensuring that no group manages to remain inside. The technical intervention requires between twenty and thirty days to be fully executed, according to the government team.

Technical intervention and budgetary cost

To carry out the remediation of the property, a specialized firm with previous experience in similar operations has been hired. The property will have to bear a cost of two hundred and fifty thousand euros to cover all the planned actions. The work plan includes the following tasks

  • complete emptying of all floors
  • systematic removal of accumulated waste
  • thorough cleaning and disinfection of the premises
  • inspection of exterior structural elements such as balconies
  • total boarding up of each of the existing openings

These measures seek to leave the building uninhabitable and free of health risks. During the appearance, Lluc Salellas highlighted that the selected company has extensive experience in this type of procedure.

Neighbor complaints and legal framework

The tone of the meeting also reflected the accumulated discontent on the part of some residents. Several people questioned the administrative slowness and evoked months marked by insecurity, dirtiness, and uncertainty. One of the attendees raised whether an identical scenario would have had such a delayed resolution if it had occurred in front of the municipal offices. The mayor defended that the city council acted as soon as circumstances allowed, emphasizing that current regulations required proof of specific emergencies related to structural stability, sanitation, or pests before being able to enter private property. This would confirm that the progressive deterioration of the structure was the trigger that authorized the operation. Likewise, he held the owners of the property responsible for having ignored their maintenance duties for years and criticized the judicial dispersion that slowed down the partial evictions spread across different courts. This procedural fragmentation could have dragged out the resolution of the conflict indefinitely.

"The work did not end on Monday" - Lluc Salellas, mayor of Girona

Local authorities made it clear that the operation concluded on Monday only marks the beginning of a more extensive process. The council explained that securing the property, cleaning it up, and preparing the groundwork for its future demolition requires technical procedures, administrative authorizations, and the express approval of Adif given its proximity to the railway tracks. The complete elimination of the construction will not be immediate and could take several more months while the necessary studies are finalized and the corresponding legal deadlines are met.
