The Ajuntament de Girona will elaborate a new action plan to consolidate, manage and reinforce the value of the bicycle sector in the city. The initiative aims to order an area that the council considers already consolidated and with projection, with the will to expand its weight in the local economy and in the daily life of Girona.
The drafting of the document has already been put out to tender with a budget of 42,173.27 euros and a maximum period of six months. The new plan will give continuity to the work started with the bicycle sector plan promoted in 2018.
A plan to order and make grow the sector
The deputy mayor and councilor for Economic Promotion, Gemma Geis, defends that Girona has a solid base in this area. The new document aims to better structure the existing ecosystem and detect what margin of growth it has on different fronts.
"Girona has a consolidated bicycle ecosystem with international projection" - Gemma Geis, deputy mayor and councilor for Economic Promotion
The municipal forecast is to position the bicycle as a key element in diverse areas. Among them are cycle tourism, sustainable mobility, sport, and applied technology. The objective is for this sector to generate more economic opportunities, more quality employment, and also more well-being for the citizenry.
Economic, social and environmental analysis
The plan must identify in detail the current ecosystem linked to cycling in Girona. It will also have to analyze its economic, labor, social, and environmental impact, in addition to locating new development opportunities.
That work will focus on specific sectors such as health, training, digitalization, technological innovation, and entrepreneurship. The project will also incorporate the public health perspective to encourage the use of bicycles and promote alliances with the healthcare system, the educational field, and the sports sector.
Fit in the economic strategy of city
The action is part of the Strategic Plan for Economic Promotion of Girona 2022 2026, within the Girona city of talent and innovation axis. From the city council, it is understood that the bicycle sector can act as a lever for activity and specialization in a city that already has recognition in this field.
"To order, strengthen and grow this sector so that it generates more economic opportunities, more quality employment and also more well-being for the citizenry" - Gemma Geis, Deputy Mayor and Councilor for Economic Promotion
With this commission, Girona seeks to update its roadmap and define how to consolidate a sector that it wants to make strategic, both for its economic impact and for its link with mobility, health, and innovation.
